A quick shout out to Shaggy’s Copper Country Skis, Never Summer, Harpoon Ales and Bomber! And an even bigger shout out to the Plattekill crew for battling the warm weather to give us some great snow to ski/ride this past weekend. What a great demo day. Companies like these are close to my heart – small, independently-owned and operated, and like Platty – representing a true love of the sport. Or, rather – a ... Read more

SOMETIMES OWNING a ski hill is like farming. Well it’s often farming, snow-making, stockpiling it etc. But, right now that stockpile, those whales, they’re where it’s at. And you can see Platty owner Laszlo Vajtay (below) skiing them on Sunday in the brilliant sunshine. Good news for this weekend? More sunshine. And it’s warm and those whales… Given Mother Nature’s fine case of whiplash inducing weather those whales are a promise that we ... Read more

First the snow. It fell this week. Eight inches. And that is just the natural stuff. The other stuff came from guns, the application of pressure + water and very cold temperatures. All of which makes for a very welcome Friday morning! Then there’s the phrase “ski the east.” It comes with a bit of bravado or bravery because we know what we can do. Ice/east, they nearly rhyme. And, here in the ... Read more

MLK weekend and Plattekill, like all other area resorts, was up against it. All of that beautiful, heaven-sent snow was being washed away by a very inconsiderate and torrential rainstorm rudely descending on our mountain just as the weekend approached and we were finally thawing from a glacial freeze. But you can’t keep a good mountain down. As soon as the temps hit freezing the guns were prepped and the fight was on. Ice crystals ... Read more

Isn’t it cute, this is your spirit animal this weekend Polar bears are super cute, right? And right now they are your spirit animal. Because Powder + Arctic Blasts = More. Of everything. So a how-to guide to surviving skiing at 0 degrees (or colder. Today is colder. Plus windchills). My tips are two of everything—goggles, handwarmers, base layers… First the material: wool. It wicks moisture, keeps you warm. And it doesn’t get stinky. It’s ... Read more

Opening weekend at Plattekill, and this past Sunday, I finally made it out. Descending onto Meeker Hollow Road, I was welcomed by a bright, clear morning. Snow still clung to the windswept fields, and to every branch shouldering the road. The conditions seemed great. Gearing up in the lodge, sunlight beamed in through the massive windows, lighting up the empty bar. There was only a handful of us – quickly getting ready, nodding ... Read more

GIVE A HAND to those who have your back (and legs and wrists…). This weekend is the ski patrol BBQ—also to say this weekend is promising fresh powder on Friday. So on Saturday come out and ski and then stay. It’s WinterFest, which means torchlight parade and… the ski patrol’s fundraiser. There is Brooks’ BBQ’s chicken dinner [btw Brooks won a James Beard Award, the most prestigious in the restaurant world… like the ... Read more

Your heart is here—That’s what we heard this Valentine’s Day as a group came to ski at the mountain. And here this winter, there’s been a lot to love. (Plus check out Dylan and Gavin who’ve grown up at Platty in the terrain park)… Storms dumping more than we expected, cold nights where we’ve come to turn on the snow guns soon as temps were right. We made snow this week and will ... Read more

THIS IS HOW I grew up skiing. Dog-eared ca 1972 copies of ski mags. Stacks and stacks of them. Which is to say I didn’t grow up skiing at all but spending my summer vacations in a ski house in Southern Vermont. I didn’t ski. But I read. I dreamed. I stared and studied and longed. I also grew up in Virginia, and my family wasn’t inclined towards winter. Mountains for us ... Read more

As promised, I’ve been digging around in the past to get pumped for the season. Platty’s opening day is in sight–it’s October, we’ve got a frost warning, THE PLATTEPALOOZA FALL FESTIVAL is around the corner, and I’ve swapped Summer Ale for IPA. It’s time. My 80’s my wish list would have included (besides a time-traveling DeLorean) the chance to meet my ski idols: Scot Schmidt, my Idaho girl Picabo Street, and obviously Glen Plake. I remember ...
